Why Do My Ray-Bans Make a Squeaking Nose?

Why do your Ray-Bans squeak? It's actually quite a common problem and you are not alone. It's technically not a defect, more of a annoyance.

This common issue affects Ray-Ban models with glass lenses and acetate (plastic) frames. Here are some models as a example, RB 2132 New Wayfarer, RB 2140 Original Wayfarer, RB 4147, RB 2447, RB 2180, RB 4061, RB 4068, RB 4075, RB 4089 Balorama, RB 4098 Jackie Ohh II, RB 4101 Jackie Ohh, RB 4105 Folding Wayfarer, RB 4115, RB 4125 Cats 5000, RB 4126 Cats 1000, RB 4165 Justin, RB 4171 Erika, RB 4184, RB 4195, RB 4198, RB 4201 Alex, RB 4202 Andy, RB 4203, RB 4207, RB 4210, RB 4211, RB 4214, RB 4216, RB 4221, RB 4222, RB 4223, RB 4224, RB 4225, RB 4226, RB 4227, RB 4228, RB 4232, RB 4234, RB 4235, RB 4242 and RB 4181.

The Reason Why It Squeaks

The reason your Ray-Bans make a squeaking nose is because when the item is being made, the inlay of the frames are made slightly larger, then the frames are heated to easily install the glass lenses, because glass lenses can easily crack, but after installing the lenses, once it cools down and sets, there can sometimes be a small space left in between the lens and frame which causes the your sunglasses to squeak.

How to Fix It

Yes, you heard it, there is a fix for the squeak. All you need is a hairdryer and a glass of cold water.

With the hairdryer, heat up the front of the frames moving the heat evenly. Do not heat too much, because plastic can melt and also try to avoid heating the lenses, as some have films on them that can melt. But you would really need to heat it for that to happen, so don't worry too much.

Once the frames are heated, quickly drop the frames into the glass of cold water, let it sit for a few minutes and what would have happened is once the frames cool, it tightens and that space that's causing the squeak nose is no longer there, which fixes the problem.

If you afraid of doing this yourself, you could always go to an optical and ask a professional to do it, but some may not know about this trick, so you can teach them a new technique!
